🎮 The Xbox Series X/S launched with a refined controller that is reminiscent of the Xbox One controller. Microsoft took the apporach of ‘If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it’. The Xbox One controller was known for its excellent ergonomics, responsive triggers and great battery life. The Xbox Series X/S controller builds on that legacy.

The overall footprint just a little bit smaller and fits a wider range of hand sizes more comfortably. They added a textured surface to the rear for enhanced grip and they also added it to the triggers to prevent slipping. A highly requested feature from gamers was a dedicated share button and Microsoft has listened and added one. The share button makes it easy to record and share screenshots and game clips. I think this was a smart move as gaming is more popular than ever and making content more shareable is important. Microsoft have aquired lots of studios recently to develop more platform exclusives. Adding a share button means clips of those exclusive titles will have a higher chance of trending on social media.

Overall I think Microsoft have taken a more subtle approach compared to Sony. They already had a strong foundation to build on and it’s important to note that they sell separately the excellent and highly customisable Elite Series 2 controller. But I do think Sony have outpaced Microsoft in some respects with the excellent haptics of the PS5 DualSense controller. Do you like the new controller? Let me know in the comments!
