The latest report from Counterpoint Research indicates that the Apple Watch has reached an important new milestone. According to the report, there are 100 million active Apple Watch users. Active is the keyword here. It means the devices are in use and doesn’t reflect the actual number sold which is naturally higher.
More and more consumers are attracted to the Smartwatch category thanks to year on year improvements in the technology and a plethora of health tracking functionality. This resulted in a 27% increase in year on year sales for the second quarter of 2021. Apple Watch units have increased in total sales but market share dropped slightly to 28%, down from 30% in the year-ago quarter. It’s important to note however that its closest competitor Huawei dropped from 13% market share to just over 9%, an almost 4% decrease. Apple’s market share likely dropped to several new entrants into the smartwatch market at budget price points. Crucially for the tech giant unit numbers were up as were profits.

Apple Watch Series 6 and Apple Watch SE took 1st place and 2nd place in unit sales respectively. Notably, the Apple Watch Series 3, Apple’s ageing but most affordable smartwatch was still the fourth best selling model in Q2. The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 took third place.
Apple is heavily rumoured to be unveiling its next-generation smartwatch in the next few weeks with the Apple Watch Series 7. It’s anticipated to have an all-new design reminiscent of the iPhone 12 and iPad Pro and with slightly larger displays thanks to shrunken bezels. The latest leaks point towards 41mm and 45mm case sizes respectively.
