Good journalism adheres to ethical principles and respects the privacy of sources and readers. I created AppleTLDR to share my passion for Apple’s products and services, offering insightful commentary as a former Apple employee. My passion is rooted in Apple’s commitment to privacy. I see AppleTLDR as a place for trusted, high quality information and content. That’s why I want to be as clear and transparent as possible about how I run my business. This page is regularly updated to reflect any changes to the sites privacy policy.

Who we are 🙋‍♂️

I’m JB the owner and editor of AppleTLDR and my website address is: https://appletldr.com. Right now there are no employees working for me or writing for the website on a regular basis. But guest writers may post from time to time. I’ll update this if anything changes.

Comments 💬

When visitors leave comments on the website, the data in the comments form is collected, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string for spam detection.

An anonymised string created from your email address (also called a hash) is provided to the Gravatar service to see if you’re using it. The Gravatar privacy policy is here: https://automattic.com/privacy/.

After your comment gets approved, your profile picture is visible to the public with your comment.

Media 📸

If you upload images to the website, avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Other visitors can download and extract any location data from images uploaded to the site. You can avoid this by removing EXIF and GPS data from your images.

Cookies 🍪

If you leave a comment on the site, you can choose to save your name, email address and website in cookies. This is so you don’t have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies last for one year.

If you visit the login page, the website sets a temporary cookie if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, the website sets up several cookies to save your login details and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login stays active for two weeks. If you log out, the login cookies are removed.

If guest writers edit or publish an article, an additional cookie is saved in their browser. This cookie includes no personal data and points to the post ID of the article they edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites 🌐

Sometimes articles on the site embed content from other websites (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites might collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content. Including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Advertisements 📺

The website doesn’t display banner adverts or integrated Google ads. Feel free to use an Ad Blocker on the site. Sometimes the site will use affiliate links and work with sponsors to help keep things running. These are clearly marked and unobtrusive.

If you find the content valuable, please consider making a donation to help maintain the site and support in creating future content.

Who your data is shared with ⏩

If you request a password reset, your IP address will be included in the reset email. You can use a VPN or a service like Apple’s private relay to mask this. This site doesn’t use advertisements and this information is never forwarded.

How long your data is retained for 📆

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so that follow-up comments can be approved automatically. Instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

If you register on the website and choose to store personal information on your profile, a user profile is stored. All users can see, edit, or delete their own personal information at any time (except for changing their username). Website administrators (that’s just me!) can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data 🚮

If you have an account on the site, you can request to receive an exported file of your personal data. That includes any personal data you’ve provided. You can also ask for any personal data to be erased. That doesn’t include any data that has to be kept for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where your data is sent 📭

Visitor comments are checked through an automated spam detection service.
