Apple today announced the iPhone SE 4/iPhone 16e. A new affordable iPhone model with Apple Intelligence support, the latest A18 processor, a top-notch single-lens camera system, and a refreshed, more modern design. Here’s everything you need to know.
Design
The iPhone 16e has a design that resembles the iPhone 14 and 15. It has the notch and ditches the home button. It has flat edges unlike the curved edges of the iPhone SE it replaces. And it’s available in two colours, black or white. Simple!
There’s also an action button that replaces the silent ringer switch. And Apple has added USB C to the iPhone 16e, eliminating the lightning port once and for all. You’ll get faster charging speeds, though strangely…MagSafe is missing and you’ll get faster data transfer speeds.
Processor
The chip onboard is the A18 chip first introduced with the iPhone 16. It’s a powerful chip and enables ray tracing on Apple’s new entry level iPhone 16 model. It supports all day battery life according to Apple. And for the first time, it has a custom designed modem, made by Apple. Apple’s new C1 modem is the result of years of research following Apple’s purchase of Intels modem business some time ago. But perhaps to noteworthy….
Apple Intelligence Support
The A18 chip means that the iPhone 16e supports Apple Intelligence. Features like Genmoji, Writing Tools, Image Playground and even Visual intelligence are here. It’ll also mean that future Apple Intelligence features like an upgraded Siri will arrive in a future software update.
Camera
The camera on board is the 48 megapixel shooter from the iPhone 16. It doesn’t have an ultra wide camera or the telephoto camera. But it does support a 2x crop thanks to pixel binning with no notable loss of quality. At least on a typical display size. It supports many new features that were absent from the iPhone SE with its 12 megapixel camera. It’s a much needed upgrade and will be welcomed by anybody upgrading from the current SE.
Pricing and Availability
The iPhone SE will be available for £599/$599 and ships on the 28th of February. Preorders go live on the 21/02 at 1pm UK time.
