Just kidding. It’s been 15 years, but who’s counting?
Meta today officially launched WhatsApp for iPad. The app first went into testing in September 2024 and was available to a small number of beta testers via Apple’s Test Flight app. WhatsApp allows users to send cross platform end to end encrypted messages. It’s by far the most popular messaging platform globally (though iMessage is the most popular in the US).
Apple’s iPad user base is huge with 57 million units shipped last year alone according to some estimates with 550 million units shipped between 2010 and 2023. Apple doesn’t provide exact unit sales any longer, instead focusing on revenue. But it does give you a sense of scale and the opportunity for developers. That’s why it’s so surprising that it took Meta so long to get around to creating a bespoke version of WhatsApp for iPad.
This is welcome news. And we all know that Instagram for iPad is something that people are clamouring for. An iPad version of Threads also wouldn’t go amiss either. Perhaps Meta is finally hearing our calls and working on that. According to some rumours, the Instagram app is in development…
